Achievement
By November, 1995 the Orphanage increased its intake
to 60 children. Out of the number 35 attended pre-schooling classes
in two makeshift classrooms allocated to the Orphanage at the Teshie
Roman Catholic Primary School. The rest of the 25 children are of
the nursery and kindergarten type. These are home based whose close
attentions are supervised by a qualified childcare Officer and three
childcare Assistants.
In 1998, the Orphanage was able to put back to
school ten (10) deprived Junior Secondary School pupils and three
(3) Senior Secondary School female students, mainly orphans, whose
tuition, medical expenses and atimes feeding and clothing are paid
from its scarce resources. These are school dropouts whose academic
grades are excellent but their guardians cannot take care of them.
During the same period four teenage mothers were apprenticed to
expert dressinaker and hairdresser for vocational training.
By September, 1999, 25 out of the 35 pre-schooling
children had gained admission to the Teshie Presbyterian Primary
School. The 15 Kindergarten children were also transferred to Teshie
Presbyterian Kindergarten from their home based. The year saw the
increase of teenage mothers to eight for vocational training due
to the deplorable condition in which we found them. At an early
age, they have given birth to many children in rapid Succession.
The result: neglected and abandoned children to fend for themselves
on the streets.
Prior to the children's admission to the Primary
School there had been increased pressure on Orphanage for new admission.
The extent of deprivation suffered by the children of Teshic township
as compared to children of the Kpeshie submctro (La and Nungua)
compelled Orphanage to enroll 15 entrants for pre-schooling in January,
2000. In accordance with our policies and plans for development
we have on record 10 aged folks whose activities are monitored by
constant visits and petty gifts. Some of their medical expenses
are paid by the Orphanage.
In recognition
of this determined effort and laudable achievement, the Accra Metropolitan
Assembly generously granted to the Orphanage a sizeable acreage
of land at Ca!iip T%vo. Sustsruno, Teshie for the construction of
the Orphanage Complex. On the 9'h o, No\ cinber, 1996, Mr. Nat Nunoo
Amarteifio, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, cut the sod for
work to commence on the Project. However, due to the enormous financial
constraints which confront the Orphanage, the foundation stone was
not laid until the 7,h of March, 1998 by the Chief of Tema, Nii
Adjei Okraku 11. By March 3 oth , building had progressed to floor
level. Presently, the building is at lintel level. The second step
is to raise it to roofing level and roofing. The third step is plastering,
electrical and plumbing installations. Then shall we have a warmth
and comfort of a home for these children through the Teshie Orphanage.
